The Dogue de Bordeaux can be the absolute best family dog, for the right family. I think that too often people tend to jump into a breed without really assessing whether or not the breed is a good match for the family. Sadly I have seen this time and time again. Just take a moment and look at the Dogues in rescue before you rush into acquiring a pup. I have found that many people often really do not realize what goes into owning a dog that is as large as the Bordeaux. This means several things - your furniture will get moved during play, young children may get accidentally knocked over in play and you will have to take proper care to see that your dog gets the socialization and obedience training it needs. The breed also requires special care during the warm weather and has a tendency to pant and slop water all over when they drink. You will also find occasional slime on your walls and pants. These are all factors that you should really consider. Personally I laugh at these little "quirks" however I have seen a few people scratch their heads and wonder what I'm doing with these dogs. No one breed is right for everyone. Dog ownership of any sort should be not something that one takes lightly. Should you decide that you are up for the challenges, make sure that you are ready for the commitment that this special breed requires.
Not only is it important to really consider whether or not the breed is right for your family, it is also very important to research your breeder. I have found in my short time dealing with Bordeaux breeders that there are truly some excellent knowledgeable people out there. Take your time and do not jump at the first discount puppy you come across. There are some serious health issues that you will want to try your best to avoid. Be sure to ask your breeder about health tests done on their dogs. I have found the the Dogue de Bordeaux Society provides some excellent information on health testing. Also be sure to ask your breeder about their health guarantee. As an experienced breeder I know that breeders in general expect this and often even post on their web sites what health clearances have been done. A discount puppy rarely remains that after a few visits to a vet. Pet insurance is always a good idea for any dog that you interested in purchasing.
I recommend to those who are considering purchasing a dog to go and see as many as possible prior to making your final decision. I know that seeing many Bordeaux is sometimes not possible. I find that breed clubs can help you get in contact with others that own the breed. There is nothing like seeing a breed first hand to be sure that it is what you are looking for. A Bordeaux will bring a ton of love and companionship into your life. Be sure that you can do the same for them! They absolutely must be part of the family.
